Building Basal Knowledge: Establishing a Solid Foundation for Using New Options in Basal Insulin for T2DM

Building Basal Knowledge: Establishing a Solid Foundation for Using New Options in Basal Insulin for T2DM
In this engaging activity, participants will complete 3 interactive monographs featuring audio of expert faculty discussion to learn about several new longer-acting (ultralong-acting) basal insulin analogues, which are associated with lower risks of hypoglycemia than previous long-acting basal insulin analogues and may minimize barriers to optimal basal insulin therapy use. This activity will review current evidence and best practices for using basal insulin to achieve patient-centered goals in individuals with type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM). Participants in this activity will learn about similarities and differences among available basal insulins and consider their application in patient-centered treatment regimens.

Continuing education credit: 1.5 AMA PRA Category 1 Credits, 1.5 Continuing Nursing Education credits, or 1.25 American Academy of Family Physicians Prescribed credits.

Getting Real: Virtual Case Consults on the Practical Use of Weight Loss Pharmacotherapy for Chronic Obesity Management

Getting Real: Virtual Case Consults on the Practical Use of Weight Loss Pharmacotherapy for Chronic Obesity Management
Obesity is a chronic disease associated with serious health consequences, such as cardiovascular disease and diabetes, and a fundamental goal of the medical management of obesity is weight loss for improved health. However, contributions of multiple pathogenic factors make obesity a complex disease that is unlikely to be successfully treated solely using willpower or even with a single intervention. The core approach to obesity management relies on behavioral change, reduced caloric intake, and regular physical activity; however, many people with obesity are unable to achieve and maintain sufficient weight loss to reach health goals using this approach alone. Current obesity management guidelines advocate the use of additional therapies, including weight loss pharmacotherapy, to support adherence to core interventions in individuals who struggle to lose enough weight to improve their health. Weight loss pharmacotherapy, consistent with the management of obesity as a chronic disease, should be selected based on the clinical status, needs, and preferences of the individual patient and in the context of long-term care, with frequent follow-up and adjustment as needed.

The 3 virtual case studies presented in this activity provide practical, instructional scenarios that are relevant to real-world clinical situations and demonstrate patient-centered consideration of weight loss pharmacotherapy as an option for obesity management in adult patients.

Diabetes Snap Facts: A Weekly Case-Based CME Activity

Diabetes Snap Facts: A Weekly Case-Based CME Activity
Snap Facts is a series of 4 short, text-based clinical “snapshots” featuring case-based questions with supporting evidence demonstrating how emerging GLP-1 receptor agonists might be implemented in different but clinically relevant patient case scenarios. Participants will receive 1 email per week, over 4 total weeks. Each case-based question will feature explanatory answers that will demonstrate how clinical evidence for emerging GLP-1 receptor agonists may apply to the patient case. Participants in this activity will receive 0.25 CE credit hour for each of the individual 4 segments, for a total of 1.0 CE credit hour.
